Djoolurr waangkiny - The Speaking Bones: an ancient Noongar Dreamtime story from Kellerberrin
This ancient Noongar Dreamtime story is told in the words of Elder Cliff Humphries. It formed part of his body of work presented in the Bennell v. State of Western Australia trial securing native title for the Noongar Nation in 2006.
This story was taught to Elder Cliff by his grandfather in Kellerberrin and contains sacred songs as sung by Cliff.
It tells of a young man who leaves his mother's home to go hunting. As night falls, he realises he is lost, and stumbles across mysterious bones in the bush. He is possessed by the spirit of these ancestral bones, and cannot find his way back to his family until he allows the bones to guide his legs home.
Only then can he help his long-lost ancestor to rest in peace.
