Tiwi Girl Hunters is a funny and adventurous First Nations children's book created by students from Tiwi College on Melville Island, with mentors David Lawrence and Shelley Ware.
Best friends Lola and Maryanne have grown up together on the Tiwi Islands. Although the girls have very different personalities, they share a love of hunting and are excited to go hunting on their own for the first time.
During their bush holiday, the girls head out with Lola's mum Bri, Nanna Ticky and their mischievous dog Trouble. With plenty of confidence and enthusiasm, Lola and Maryanne set off to hunt for a range of foods found on Tiwi Country.
But hunting isn't always as easy as they expect.
The girls encounter unexpected challenges as they navigate the changing tides and encounter the mysterious Nyingawi. Their adventure tests their courage, hunting skills, friendship and knowledge of Country.
Created through the Indigenous Literacy Foundation's Create Initiative, Tiwi Girl Hunters gives young readers an opportunity to experience a story written from the perspective of Tiwi young people while learning about Tiwi language, culture, family, hunting, bush tucker and Country.
